PIZZA

As part of our Scrumdiddlyumptious topic we have been discussing the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods and trying to demonstrate how some of our favourite treats can be made a little less damaging to our health and waistbands.

This week the children designed and made their own 'HEALTHY' pizzas in class.

Before the fun of making and eating, we looked at the nutritional value of different ingredients and each group of children was then allowed to choose 3 ingredients to top their pizza.

Choices included peppers, pineapple, sweetcorn, chicken and tuna. Attached are pictures of some of the creations that were devoured on Tuesday afternoon.

As an added bonus, I did promise the class that next week we could try an unhealthy food, as a comparison.

Food (Glorious????) Food

Another week has passed so quickly in Gascoigne class.

This week the children have worked really hard, recapping negative numbers. They have challenged not only  themselves but also myself and Miss Wadlow, by applying their knowledge and skills to a range of tricky maths problems!!

In literacy we have concluded our Instructions unit with a 'Hot Write' set of instructions describing how to get dressed for school. These will then be reviewed before the children are given one final chance to edit next week.

Finally, we have had more Learning Log offerings this week, hence the post title.
This included, Leo making some delicious biscuit sandwiches, Millie provided us with banana, Nutella & strawberry sandwiches and Dexter tested our taste buds with an assortment of chocolate flavourings. It's safe to say white choc with raisins went down a little better than chocolate with a hint of ketchup! Thanks Dex.

Apologies for the lack of photos, hopefully our class iPad will come out of hiding next week ready for our cooking classes and science investigation.

Instructions and BOSSY VERBS

This week in Gascoigne class the children have started writing their own instructions and looking at some of the key features of this writing style.
In particular they enjoyed learning about bossy / imperative verbs and the boys were a little obsessed with the Imperative Verb song.

In maths we have tackled problem solving linked to the different elements of place value covered so far this year. This is quite a tricky concept for some children but the class have worked really hard trying to improve their understanding.

We have also continued with our Scrumdiddlyumptious topic and the children have been planning some INTERESTING recipes to create a healthy menu and an unhealthy menu.
It is then the intention to make SOME of these in class for everyone to sample and hopefully have some interesting photos for our Blog.

First week back

Welcome back for a new and exciting year. I hope everyone had a lovely summer and that both adults and children are refreshed for the new academic year! 

Our first topic this year is 'Scrumdiddlyumptious' which means a lot of geography & science as well as plenty of food based DT learning. Hopefully no one is dieting! 

In literacy the children wrote a recount last week and we will be using this and other texts over the coming weeks to really focus on getting the basics of writing correct. Capitalisation, punctuation, tense and spellings. 

In maths we have started work on place value and related aspects such as rounding, negative numbers and Roman numerals.

Learning logs were handed out on Friday with some 'suggested tasks', however this list is not exhaustive. Children should complete 3 separate tasks, related to the topic Scrumdiddlyumptious and are restricted to just one double page in they books. (Although they are allowed to stick in & fold additional sheets) 

This work is due in week beginning 30th October 2017.

Arguments and Averages

What a busy few weeks we have had in class!!

Today the children continued their computing lessons with Miss Walker who is visiting us from Queen Ethelburga's school, every Thursday afternoon. The children have already learnt so much, in just 3 weeks, about simple programming tools using MicroBits and Miss Walker has been especially pleased with their attention and ability to take on board so much new information.

Writing - for the last 2 weeks we have been arguing a lot in class - or at least investigating and writing balanced arguments or discussions. The class have very much enjoyed looking at pros and cons of wearing school uniform and eating healthy or unhealthy foods. 

In maths we have developed data handling skills, dealing with statistics and trying to work out averages. This also led to lots of debate about rounding and measurement - who knew maths concepts could be interlinked!!!!???

Hopefully Learning Logs have arrived home. This terms topic is Blue Abyss and LL should be brought to school by Monday 12th June to be presented during that week.

Time and Time Again

Welcome back after the Easter holidays, I hope everyone had a lovely break.

We are straight back to it in Gascoigne class starting with our new topic, Blue Abyss, which covers a variety of geographical, scientific and DT related themes.

In maths we have been telling the time this week on both analogue and digital clocks as well as converting units of time.

In literacy we are developing our understanding of how to write accurate instructions and in particular focusing on the use of imperative verbs.

Both our maths and literacy themes will be continued next week.

Also, year 4 parents, please keep an eye out for a letter regarding next weeks skipping festival.

Artists and Authors

It's been another busy week in Gascoigne class with many learning opportunities across the whole curriculum.

On Monday we were visited by Nicola from Leeds City Art Galłery who led a workshop with the children based on some of the galleries exhibits. Each child drew a chosen artwork before the class then voted for their favourite, to be featured in a publication when the gallery reopens later this year.

We also took part in a workshop, on World Book Day, with visiting author Hilary Robinson, writing our own version of mixed up fairytales. The class really enjoyed being given creative license, within reason, to develop their own stories and I can disclose that they didn't all HAPPILY EVER AFTER!

Later in the afternoon the class then did some shared reading with Wheler class, a fantastic experience 

This week we have also continued to develop multiplication skills in maths, learning about square and cube numbers and applying our knowledge through maths games.

In literacy, as well as writing fairy tales the children have been tasked with the role of editors, improving the spellings, grammar, punctuation and description in various pieces of work.
